Was able to get out and do some gardening tonight. Yay. It is a shame that the lilacs have gone by. I was lucky and was able to get some gardening time while they were in full bloom. They are intoxicating. The Peonies and Iris flowers will be next. I enjoy my garden time.

I told my Dad that now that the weather is getting warmer (even if it rains) I dont want to be hemmed in by plans with family. I either want to be in the garden/at the beach/or with friends. Im tired of just sitting and listening to sick and tired family.

There is a family wedding that I am dreading. The wedding should be a fun thing, but the family is killing it. The wedding is in Worcester. Dad want to go out to it with the cousins. I wanted to meet them at the train station. Dad threw a hissy fit and said he wouldn't go to the wedding if I didn't go with them. We have booked a hotel for 2 nights as the wedding is at 2:00 on Saturday. They want to leave Boston at 10 AM on Friday. REALLY...ffffffff.... And it gets worse. Since stroke cousin refuses to sit in a back seat and cancer/spinal surgery cousin cannot drive but needs to sit in. a front seat the cousins have taken over my Dad's car. cancer/spinal surgery cousin will drive with dad, and the younger bitchy sister will also go with them. They need me in the back seat of the clown car...errr.. van so I can take car of the 96 year old aunt. They also have to pack in my Dad's car as they are bringing 3 walkers and 2 commodes and a case of adult diapers. I have no idea why we are leaving so early when we can't get into the hotel until 4 PM. I also dont know how Dad will do as I am his navigator...we and the GPS on my phone. The 2 cousins that are with him dont have any common sense. I hope the hotel has a bar.

I did tell Dad that I would away to New Hampshire with him for Father's Day, He wants to go to his boss's condo where we stayed in the fall. We can go and then head home Sunday and we can stop at a casino in Nashua that he has wanted to try. It should make him happy.

The following week I head to New Jersey with my friends Phoenix Swords. I am looking forward to to that.

Maybe next week I can walk barefoot in the ocean =)

lannamichaels: "Sit Down John" written in a stencil font in white on a maroonish background. Quote from 1776. (sit down john)
[personal profile] lannamichaels

I wrote this on tumblr nearly a year ago in reply to:

byjove:

countries will be like “nooooo our birth rate is falling exponentially and it’s effecting our economy” and immigrants will be like “hey can you let us in so we can boost your economy and fill your empty jobs and raise our children here” and inevitably the country is like “the only thing worse than a large scale collapse of our population is letting foreigners live here”

byjove:
America’s immigration policies are difficult enough but I read the immigration policies for some countries and it is batshit insane. they’re straight up like “we hate disabled people, we hate people who don’t speak our language, if you don’t have a $85k a year salary lined up for you, we don’t want you to move here. if by some miracle you jump through all the hoops and move here, it will take you 20 years to obtain citizenship and during that time we will not rent to you because you’re a foreigner.” damn bitch. fuck you.

lannamichaels:

I read foreign policy stuff and every few months, like clockwork, there’s an article about [insert country here] having demographic problems caused by not enough young people and What That Means.

And every single time, I have only two questions:

1. What is your immigration policy?
2. How much does it cost to have and raise a baby, both direct monetary and intangibles, such as does a woman destroy her entire professional career to do so?

Fixing both of those will fix every single falling population problem I have ever read about in those places. Because the answer is generally “both. both are bad.” And places where the second one is considered to be fine, the first one absolutely isn’t.

(I state these are the constant issues at play in foreign policy writings to contrast that with the stuff I’ve heard about from rural demographic problems where the issue is “we have young people, but they leave because there aren’t any jobs.” That is internal population shifting within a country and comes with other problems, ex: rent.)

I bring this up here now because I'm not going to keep adding on to someone else's post, especially this long after, but we have a new entry in the "every so often Foreign Policy likes to talk about birthrates" trend and it's...

It's an entire article about how Israel doesn't have this problem, because Jewish women tend to have lots of kids compared to the rest of the countries considered equivalent economically, and at NO POINT mentions the Holocaust.

How oh how do you have an article about how Jewish women have a culture where having a lot of kids is considered necessary and DO NOT MENTION THAT, I do not know. It probably gets included in, oh, it's a religious reason, but except not that much because it points out that secular Israelis also have more kids on average than the comparison population.

The author cannot be this clueless. Was it just that he felt it awkward to point out there is the actual need to repopulate????? Even I have heard from women dealing with infertility who feel like complete failures because they can't help poke Hitler in the eye.

As a complete aside, though, since I'm on this subject, many things piss me off in Harry Potter and Harry Potter fandom but among the worst is the Weasleys. Molly and Arthur Weasley are the only characters in that entire backstory who understood the assignment.

Congratulations, you have just managed to survive a genocide that wiped out an entire generation! What do you do?

Every other character: uh, have one or two kids?

Arthur and Molly Weasley: hold our birth control.

Yes, yes, I'm aware that in context, the Weasleys aka "poor and red haired with more children than they can afford" are anti-Irish bigotry. Also we don't know too much about random other characters and their families, true.

But seeing it repeated in fandom? Oh, that's a lot of people who don't know what it's like to be part of a people that survived a genocide five minutes ago.

The magical world is in a massive demographic problem* and the Weasleys are the only ones who are taking it seriously.

*all this random extra ridiculous pureblood stuff that isn't in the books that has become some kind of calcified fanon also makes no sense, and part of the reason it makes no sense is that your population size is too goddamn small. The magical world in Britain, if we take the numbers seriously, is actively in the process of dying out.

The fairy tales

May. 15th, 2025 05:01 pm
scripsi: (Default)
[personal profile] scripsi
I loved fairy tales as a small child, and I continued to read and love them long after my friend outgrew them. My parents had a book on Vietnamese tales, and one with Swedish ones, and later I found Andrew Lang’s Fairy books with tales collected all over the world. I was fascinated that tales like the Cinderella story had many different versions. In the Swedish one, for example, Cinderella went to three balls, dressed first in silver, then gold, then in a bejewelled gown, and though she dropped the shoes, it wasn’t made of glass. She also only had one stepsister, and the story didn’t end with the wedding. No, the stepsister pushed Cinderella into the sea, where she was going to be forced to marry a sea monster, while the stepsister made herself look like Cinderella. Luckily the prince noticed, and managed to save his bride, though not before she was turned into a serpent that he had to dip into three baths, winter, milk and water, to save.

When I was around 10, my mother took a university course on children’s books, and read Bruno Bettelheim’s The Uses of Enchantment, which I picked up and which had a profound impact on my ability to comprehend and analyze my reading. I’se been a long time since I read it, so I’m quoting Wikipedia on it.

Bettelheim analyzed fairy tales in terms of Freudian psychology in “The Uses of Enchantment” (1976). He discussed the emotional and symbolic importance of fairy tales for children, including traditional tales once considered too dark, such as those collected and published by the Brothers Grimm. Bettelheim suggested that traditional fairy tales, with the darkness of abandonment, death, witches, and injuries, allowed children to grapple with their fears in remote, symbolic terms. If they could read and interpret these fairy tales in their own way, he believed, they would get a greater sense of meaning and purpose.

I’ve also realized I missed a book in my list on books which impacted me, namely One Thousand and One Nights. My father’s parents has a lovely edition in a set of 6 books, which I used to read every time I visited. I was very happy when they gifted the set to me when I turned 16. It’s a 1920s edition with gorgeous illustration by Gudmund Hentze. Also abridged- too racy sequences are edited out, though the book helpful points out that even if the edited text is “very amusing,it doesn’t conform to our time’s view on morality”. It’s also not all of the stories, though I’m unsure how many there should be.

  • I finished Leaves of Absence by Opal Moritz. Pretty good! Did leave me feeling like it was just the beginning of a story though.
  • I finished Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire. Very good book, it really got me in the feels near the end. Also lovely to see my fave Nancy!
  • I started reading You and Me and the Airbnb by Rena Butler, an M/M romance short story. Haven't gotten far.
  • Ficwise, I took a turn through some Kylux fics for a couple of days before realizing I needed to do way more digging/rec requesting to get the kind of dynamic I wanted lol Going back to my friend's Stobotnik rec list I think.
Watching
  • My parents were here for the weekend and we ended up watching some random NCIS episodes. I used to love that show so much and now it's like fine... for copaganda.

"System-neutral" random tables for items etc. to be found in dungeons, wildernesses, etc. from Raging Swan Press

If you read these posts you probably already know that this really isn't my sort of thing. But someone out there is probably saying "Hey, just what I needed", and I think it's fair to say that you do get a LOT of random lookup tables for your money. Useful if you want to create a setting in a hurry, but I generally prefer to add my own - although sometimes this ends up a little oddly, I'm still trying to work out why one of my NPCs has a desk drawer containing "postcards and stereoscope pictures from strange places such as Lhasa, Peking, the Plateau of Leng, Boston, Boca del Infierno California, and Havana, and peculiar dice with eight, ten, and even twenty sides" since they play absolutely no part in that particular adventure. If you don't have a warped mind like mine you may find this bundle useful.

I haven’t done this in four years, so it will be interesting to see the changes.

I currently have 123 fics on AO3 divided between 27 fandoms. There are only four more in each category, compared to four years ago. But then I haven't been writing much, so not surprising. Also, nothing new since The Queen's Gambit has sparked my inspiration.

My top five fandoms
1.Doctor Who, 32 fics
2.Peter Pan, 17 fics
3. Versailles 8 fics
4.Harry Potter, 8 fics
5. The Queen’s Gambit, 6 fics

Number 5 is new, removing the fandoms Penny Dreadful and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

If you think defending your right to use a common name as a pejorative is more important than listening to everyone with that name saying "please stop, this is causing us actual real harm", then just let me know right now and I can ban you from my blog and you can ban me and then we'll all live happily ever after: you with your moral superiority that you can hurt whoever you want as long as you feel you have a good enough reason, and me without having to endure this right now or ever.

Like, I thought we all got over this in middle school, using someone's name as an insult because, tee hee, teacher, I'm not really calling them a bad word, I'm just turning their name into a bad word, that's totally different!!!!

I am so incredibly serious. I have limited ability to cope and this shit has already ruined two days within the last seven entirely by triggering mental health problems and making me literally actually cry with frustration over why so many people are so keen on hurting people even when they've asked them repeatedly to stop.

This is not a victimless term. You need to fucking stop or get out of my life and I'll get out of yours and we'll both move on.

At a quick look it's a little on the expensive side but covers a lot of ground, if you're into the system there's probably a lot that you'll want. But given the prices it's possible that it may be a better idea to buy the material as you need it, rather than getting everything at once.
