It’s also about Jack’s character arc, and how his view of the Doctor changes as he learns more about both the Doctor and himself. I love stories where characters have their expectations of each other subverted, and this is very much one of those, in a tremendously hopeful and thoughtful way. Oh, and there’s also a great action plot!

Reasons for reccing: It's Doctor Who's anniversary - 59 years old today! So I had to rec a multi-Doctor vid, and this one fitted the bill perfectly. It focuses on the goodbyes (and hellos) of regeneration stories over the decades, featuring all the Doctors and a good many companions and adversaries (especially those in the Regeneration episodes), and at the end brings us right up to date with Thirteen. And isn't one of the greatest strengths of this old show of ours, the notion of regeneration - the ability to continually change and grow that's let it carry on for decades, and even regenerate itself after what looked like the end? This is a beautiful exploration of that, in loss and grief - and the joy of renewal.

Reasons for reccing: So here I was, wondering if I could come up with something for the "PWP" prompt on my card, because I only very rarely read PWP fics for Doctor Who, and there was none that came to mind that I'd want to rec. And then I stumbled over this vid, enjoyed it a lot, and was reminded of all the euphemistic interpretations of the Doctor's "dancing", which fit this vid perfectly - not least because the opening clip with Jack and his inability to talk without innuendo sets the tone right away. There's no plot, no tragedy, and no big arcs, just a lot of dancing, movement, siginificant looks, and shippiness. I particularly enjoyed the fun energy and all the great Nine/Rose content.

There's a lot of humour and great timing, and I really like its little meta aspect when it lets Janeway and the Doctor talk about interfering in other peoples' business and travel options.

Reasons for reccing: I guess reccing a vid for this theme is kind of obvious, but I really appreciate how well the editing uses the rhythm and musical structure of the song. (I also had to watch it again to be absolutely sure that they hadn't snuck in a bit of the Gallifrey theme at the end there, but no, the high notes of the string part just reminded me of it. Still works, though.) It's a great overview vid, covering all eras of New Who (until 2015 when it was made) and a lot of different aspects of the show. It's also a great monster vid: It makes good use of a lot of creepy visuals and big scale space shots, with many "Doctor and companion running" moments, only to turn that around and take a look at the Doctor possibly becoming a monster/the one to run from himself. Saving him from that: his companions.

I really love how this vid seamlessly transitions between the angsty and tragic moments of their relationship to the ones filled with joy and hope and then back again. Their relationship is one of goodbyes and loss (Nine’s death and TenRose’s separation)but it’s also about hellos and renewals (Ten’s regeneration and Tentoo’s birth). It’s just a fantastic tribute to the dynamic of these characters and it’s also a bit of an unusual rec for me. I tend to like vids that have a lot of heavy dialogue, but this vid mostly lets the music and editing carry it with only a couple lines of dialogue (one in the middle and one towards the end). I don’t tend to go for those vids, but this one used that “silence” greatly to its benefit and its incredibly remarkable.
