Title: A Little Fun Detour
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JustMcShane
Rating: Teen and up
Word Count/Length/Size: 3569
Creator's Summary: The Suffering Game has two new contestants. It may never let them go.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: Significant but nongraphic violence, major character death.
Reasons for reccing: This is a fantastic and heartbreaking story with some very poignant character moments for Seven and Ace. Like the description implies, there is a lot of angst and lots of suffering for in store for Ace and the Doctor in this fic. This story is a crossover with The Adventure Zone: Balance, the first campaign of the The Adventure Zone, a D&D podcast. However, in my opinion it can be enjoyed canonblind, as the Doctor and Ace are also figuring out how things work as they go along and you don't really need to know all the backstory to understand this story.

This is my sixth rec for the "Claim a Character" challenge.

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JustMcShane
Rating: Mature
Word Count/Length/Size: 63784
Creator's Summary: An unexpected detour leads to the Doctor and Ace teaming up with the FBI to investigate a series of disturbingly specific floral-themed murders. But with Ace's increasingly strange dreams, a hyper-empathetic consultant who can't seem to empathize quite so well any more, and one Doctor Hannibal Lecter in the mix, the murders may be the least of their problems...
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Hannibal Lecter, Will Graham, Beverly Katz
Warnings/Notes: Graphic depictions of violence, body horror, serial murder and cannibalism.
Reasons for reccing: I loved the depiction of Seven and Ace's relationship and Ace is an adult in this fic and her characterization is such a natural progression from where we leave her in Season 26. This fic has some absolutely fantastic Seven & Ace characterization, great drama, some wonderful protective Seven moments, as well as some really good hurt/comfort moments.

This fic is a crossover with the recent Hannibal TV show, but I was able to enjoy it and my only experience with the show was what my mutuals on Tumblr post about it. As long as you're familiar with the basic premise of the show, you should be fine. It is fascinating to see how the Doctor and Ace react to being thrown into a much darker universe than the one we normally see them in.

This is my fifth rec for the "Claim a Character" challenge.

Title: one plus six
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JustMcShane
Rating: Gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 5271
Creator's Summary: For the first half hour of wandering through the forest outside the biodome, everything was fine – despite the fact that they were, of course, very very lost. And then it wasn’t.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Thomas "Hex" Schofield, Seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None.
Reasons for reccing: This is such a sweet and lovely hurt/comfort fic. I love how Seven cares for his friends, and his friends care for him in return. There are so many sweet and funny moments and, overall, this fic just wonderfully captures the relationship between Ace, Hex and Seven.

This is my fourth rec for the "Claim a Character" challenge and my first rec for this month's theme challenge, "Companions."

Title: Foundling Bird
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JustMcShane
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 5454 words
Creator's Summary: “Once upon a time, a mother abandoned her child in the middle of a dark forest in the dead of night – and she was never relevant to the story ever again.”
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: It starts of as a story of the Doctor and Ace stuck in a corridor in the TARDIS, which is beautifully eerie. And then the Doctor tells his version of a fairy story, which is really well told, but what's interesting is Ace's reactions to it and to fairy stories in general. And the Doctor's reactions to her. It's an interesting story and a great look at the relationship between the two of them and how well they know each other.

Fourth entry for my bingo card: "hurt/comfort."

Title: loved the stars too fondly
Creator: JustMcShane
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 2,571
Creator's Summary: Ace is... existing. Or trying to, anyway. The Doctor helps, of course.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings/Notes: Swearing

Reasons for reccing: I admit, when I realized my best path to bingo lay through hurt/comfort, a genre that is not normally my favorite, I worried a bit. But then this story landed in my lap last week when I was going through the Teaspoon queue, and it grabbed me immediately with its flawless grasp of Ace's voice, and an equally flawless grasp on the fierce familial love she and Seven have for each other. It's set post-"Soldier Obscura," a Seven and Ace Big Finish audio I haven't listened to yet, but it's easy to follow along with regardless; Ace is recovering from traumatic memory loss, and blames herself for a weakness that could never be her fault. Seven listens and soothes her in a uniquely Seventh Doctor way, and honestly, I could visualize Sylvester McCoy doing exactly what JustMcShane has him doing here. A truly lovely surprise like this shouldn't be passed up, so I am happy this came my way so I can share it with the comm.
