Reasons for reccing: Both for the monthly theme of multi-era, and for the seasonal challenge (due to being of type slash, and Jamie/Eight is a rare pairing, and also Charley Pollard as a character, though she's only got a fairly short part in this). I did kind of promise to bring more explicit slash on board, among other things. ;-) Anyway, I have a fondness not only for Two/Jamie but also for Jamie getting... involved with other, later Doctors. This my favourite story of that specific type, being fun, feel-good and feeling true to the characters. I loved reading it even before I was at all familiar with Eight, but now that I know him (and Charley) from the audios, it's even more fun.

Warnings/Notes: Descriptions of aftermath of violence/war and mention of child death in Chapter Four. The chapters are basically individual stories, though, so if that disturbs you, you can just skip the fourth chapter and read the others.

Reasons for reccing: I love stories of Jamie learning things (not that you could guess), and this one has all sorts of wonderful stories on that theme. There's Jamie encountering a scary-looking but non-evil alien (I wish canon gave us more of those, especially in the 60s!), there's Jamie learning about bacteria and trying to wrap his head around having millions of them in his body, and there's even Jamie learning about evolution! And because it's kathkin, it's well-written with excellent characterization and voice for Jamie, Doctor and everyone else.

One of the reasons I find well-written Jamie-learns-things and Doctor-explains-things-to-Jamie fics so fascinating that they illustrate how much the world has changed in a few centuries and how much science has discovered in the modern era that would be completely outside the common person's knowledge through most of human history. And how much of what we take for granted would be completely foreign to most of our ancestors. I suppose it's also one of the reasons why I so much enjoy Jamie and other historical companions and wish the show had more of them (or any in the modern era).

ETA: Ooh, and I just realized this qualifies for the monthly theme as well, because the last chapter is about natural history and very pre-historic Earth - that is history as well!

Title: Five Times the Doctor Kissed Jamie (and One Time Jamie Kissed Him)

Creator's Summary: Who was to say he wasn’t normal to kiss your friends? This was probably perfectly normal in the future. In which Jamie and the Doctor do a lot of kissing for two people who are just friends.

Reasons for reccing: Finally getting started with my character claim on the seasonal challenge, with one of my go-to fics for funny, sweet Jamie McCrimmon fic and especially Two/Jamie fluff. As always in this author's fics, the Jamie characterization and voice are spot on, and his interactions with the Doctor are thoroughly adorable. It's also one of my favourite uses of the 5 + 1 times format, where the 5 + 1 times build up to a clear narrative with progress. Plus is an excuse for a lot of kissing. And the kissing is really nicely written. The story goes from the Ben and Polly era to the Zoe era, though only Ben and Polly among the other companions are present as characters.

I totally ship these two, so I have no idea how well the fic works for non-shippers, but if you can deal with lots of cuddling and snuggling and cluelessly-in-love Jamie, the characterizations and the Jamie voice certainly are lovely.


A tiny quote: There was no way he could pretend to himself that it was a friendly kiss, for he was sure kisses between friends weren’t meant to make your heart quicken or your stomach turn over, nor were they meant to go on quite this long, and they definitely weren’t – ah – meant to involve quite so much tongue.

Title: Anger Issues, or, Loud and Fast

Warnings/Notes: some violence, some talk of trauma

Reasons for reccing: It's a touching exploration of how past trauma may lead to in anger control issues and violence, and the difficulty of admitting to emotions and issues you don't know how to deal with. In this story, Jamie's picking a lot of fights and refuses to admit he might have some unresolved issues from his past experiences, in the war. But help comes from unexpected sources - and the ending is in fact quite sweet. It's emotionally really powerful - as in, I cried buckets when I first read it. Might have been an emotional day for me, but anyway, it's great.

I'm choosing this for the "battle/struggle" square on my bingo card. I don't really read a lot of fics actually about battles, but I love reading fics about the after effects of traumatic events such as battles. Especially on characters I adore who might have issues admitting the said effects, such as Jamie. More figuratively, there is a lot of struggle with emotions going on here.

Reasons for reccing: For the monthly theme 'humour'! This is an adorable, funny little fic where Jamie encounters the food machine of a spaceship, and it goes less than ideally.

I've only recently been getting into Classic Who, aided by the ongoing Twitch marathon, and I immediately fell head over heels in love with the Second Doctor era and his companions. So I've been gobbling up fics for the last few weeks, and I love kathkin's fics are well written and capture everyone's voice perfectly. While Jamie's confusion over future era technology is adorable, I'm sure many of us in the current age can sympathize with his frustration over machines that just don't make sense. I know I did.
