Title: Twelfth Doctor Tribute | I am The Doctor
Creator: [youtube.com profile] Sharon_Studio
Rating: gen
Length: 7:03 minutes
Creator's Summary: In one month from today, we're going to see Peter Capaldi as The Doctor, probably for the last time.
I am dedicating this video for all the cast and crew throughout the 8 to 10 seasons, to Steven Moffat for his brilliant words and especially, to Peter Capaldi.

Characters/Pairings: Twelve and the members of his "team": Clara, Bill, Nardole, Missy, River
Warnings/Notes: None, except possibly strong feelings of nostalgia and of missing Twelve's era all over again.

Reasons for reccing: I've watched quite a few of the goodbye vids produced in the wake of Twelve's departure. This one slipped by me until tonight, and I was touched by this version of the Doctor's story. The vidder takes a somewhat different slant on his journey of self-discovery, employing quotes and shots familiar from other vids but also using unexpected intercuts and expressions that, among other things, highlight the subtlety and vulnerability of Peter Capaldi's face. The portrait Capaldi created of the Doctor is an extraordinary achievement, IMO, and Sharon Studio assembles a coherent narrative to show us who Twelve is or tries to be. The vid was made before "Twice Upon a Time" aired, which is a shame; it would have reinforced the theme, but never mind. Sharon Studio's love for this Doctor shines through.

Title: How many seconds in eternity?
Creator: [youtube.com profile] Margarita3710
Rating: Gen
Length: 5:09 minutes
Creator's Summary: "...How long can I keep doing this?..."
Characters/Pairings: All NuWho Doctors and brief cameos by companions
Warnings/Notes: melancholy

Reasons for reccing:
Margarita Life is one of my favorite Who vidders, emotionally focused and powerful, adept at juxtaposing images and choosing relevant snippets of dialogue. This vid could be seen as a complement to the previous rec; its subject is loss and loneliness, the true constants of the Doctor's endless life. His suffering and his desire to brush it off flicker repeatedly before our eyes, suffused with the vidder's compassion for his dilemma, the cruelty of immortality. She singles out his endurance rather than his arrogance or absurdity, and the piling-up of evidence will make you ache for the Doctor and those he leaves behind.

Creator: [youtube.com profile] BeCumSH (Cutthroat Bitch)
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 2:03 minutes
Creator's Summary: Time and relevant dimensions in space.
Characters/Pairings: Twelve, Bill, Nardole
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing:
This is a brief, charming, fast-paced reminder of the friendship between Bill Potts and the Doctor. The editing boasts a light touch, graceful, witty, and affectionate toward all concerned. The vid itself is surprisingly upbeat considering it's Twelve's farewell season, which is a nice contrast to the many tributes that follow him to the bitter end. I love these three rascals, their playfulness and care for one another. It's a joyful little celebration of Doctor and companion (and Doctor's minder) laughing and hugging and getting into trouble, with all the tragedy left for another day.

Here, have another set of Twelve/Clara fanvids, this time permeated with sadness. Most of the romantic vids for this ship have a melancholy arc, for obvious reasons. I may have to post a second set later because there are just too many good ones to choose from.

Title: are you looking for her?
Creator: littlecreature on YouTube
Rating: G
Length: 3:30
Creator's Summary: my prayers have been answered and these two got to meet (sorta) one more time! if you don't think they're crazy canon, what are you doing?
Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing:
Many of the iconic moments from their two-series run are represented here, the ones that turn up in fanvids again and again, bringing out the intense feelings and connections that lead Twelve and Clara to make really bad choices and heartbreaking sacrifices. The way Clara touches the Doctor's face; the number of times Twelve says, "I can save you." Also, you have two actors with extraordinary, emotional eyes, and they're often framed to look at each other as if there is no one else in the room or possibly the universe. The piano track is delicate and bittersweet, a gentle commentary on their doomed relationship.

Title: Kansas
Creator: purplefringe vids on YouTube
Rating: G
Length: 4:33
Creator's Summary: It's not regret, just an unexpected accounting of debts, only now called...
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing:
This vid uses Vienna Teng's beautiful song as a framework for collecting many of the parallel moments, the reflected gestures, mutual deaths, the fragments and glimpses of memory, to give evidence of a love affair that happened and yet didn't. It's visible in all the details, but the necessary renunciation prevents it from ever being made overt - except perhaps in whatever it is Clara says in the Cloisters. It's a beautiful summation of a pair who are too much alike, too intertwined, and ultimately not meant to be. That final shot of the Doctor nearly dissolving in light, entering the TARDIS like a ghost, haunted by all the ghosts of Clara we've just witnessed, is both a visual statement of great clarity on which to end their journey and simply, breathtakingly lonely.

Title: Two Hearts
Creator: JCF Productions on YouTube
Rating: G
Length: 2:17
Creator's Summary: Get yourself a man who fights in his eternal torture chamber for 4.5 billion years just to see you smile again.
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing:
This is one of my favorite vids, unashamedly romantic and partisan, a constructed-reality vid that juxtaposes out-of-context lines of dialogue with complementary visuals to endorse a romantic interpretation of Twelve and Clara's tragedy. The narrative doesn't entirely play fair, but it creates a dramatic argument for their tangled and too-intense emotions. It acknowledges the occasions of betrayal and willfulness, the lies and inability to be honest about their feelings, while arranging, through clever editing, for the truth to be brought to light. It leaves the viewer in no doubt of the vidder's opinions on the question of love. The music here rises to a sweeping crescendo, then retreats back into a more circumspect counting of musical seconds right before, as the show does, cutting away from Clara as she prepares to make her confession.

Title: basil and cleopatra
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] jontinf
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 13,887
Creator's Summary: Clara and the Doctor if they'd never stopped running.
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Clara Oswald
Warnings/Notes: The author tags for animal death, but it's very glancing.

Reasons for reccing: Firstly, I adore this author's style. Jontinf reproduces the comic-duo spark and swerve of Twelve and Clara's bark and banter and their sheer pleasure in egging each other on, quick-witted, sharp-tongued, sentiment-averse, sometimes downright surreal. It's a series of scenes and moments from their fugitive existence as they run and run, evading the Time Lords, ducking the shadow of death and watching for signs that the space-time fabric is about to rip open. The writing is clever and frolicsome, a tumultuous surface over a darker current of increasing desperation. The melancholy grows. So does the abrasiveness, the heartbreak, the devotion as the two of them face the fact that Clara will never again have a pulse. The Doctor can't fix everything. There is no cure.

Not all writers can convincingly put the Doctor into a sex scene, but Jontinf takes that awkwardness and makes it simply part of how they communicate, carnal and intense and ridiculous. Also proof of yet more bad judgment, since it binds them closer to each other despite the hopelessness of their flight. In some ways, this is a tale demonstrating why the Doctor should not cling to his companions; they must always leave him in the end.

I signed up to post Twelve/Clara recs at the worst possible time of year; December turned out to be a fannish black hole. However, I still have the recs lined up, and if no one objects, I'd like to post them over the next couple of weeks. Apologies for my tardiness, and I hope a few people enjoy what follows.

Twelve/Clara is an intensely co-dependent ship, unhealthy and obsessive and beautiful, bringing out the best and the worst in both of them. It led to great sacrifices and great betrayals, and to the Doctor nearly cracking apart time and space rather than face a universe without Clara. All three of these vids emphasize those aspects of their relationship and this particular Doctor's reaction to loss.

Title: addiction
Creator: Rebel Timelord
Rating: Gen
Length: 2:06
Creator's Summary: "this video is meant to explore the dysfunctionality of the relationship between the Twelfth Doctor and Clara and the idea of their addiction to each other."
Characters/Pairings: Twelve/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: The score is haunting, the clips are well-chosen to suggest how Twelve and Clara mirror each other, even to the way they stand, arms outspread, when death comes for them. The mood is ominous, hypnotic, and darkly romantic.

Title: Memories Become Stories
Creator: Twelvety d.
Rating: Gen
Length: 3:57
Creator's Summary: None given
Characters/Pairings: Twelve/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: The music chosen for this vid mimics the unnerving tick of a cosmic clock, which gives the vidder a structure for building up suspense. The narrative focuses on the Doctor's time in the confession dial, the endlessly circling torment, hinting at his obsessive train of thought. It's spell-binding and almost dizzying, as if we're trapped inside the Doctor's mind watching the centuries pass and replaying Clara's death.

Title: Pulse
Creator: [youtube.com profile] KatrinDepp
Rating: Gen
Length: 4:58
Creator's Summary: "So here is my take on twelve/clara era"
Characters/Pairings: Twelve/Clara
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: KatrinDepp is an amazing vidder, and her skill at matching clips to beats and building a breathtaking arc has won this vid a lot of well-deserved praise. It's sharp and precise in its whip-crack visual style, relentless in its pacing, melancholy and fierce rather than sentimental. It makes you scramble to keep up, which isn't a flaw but an aesthetic pleasure, and it illustrates how powerful and potentially lethal a grief-maddened Doctor might be. The whole thing is stimulating and beautifully composed, a portrait of Twelve's more desperate side. I've watched it at least a dozen times, and it never fails to thrill me.

Title: Halfway Out of the Dark
Creator: Purplefringe Vids on YouTube
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 4:14
Creator's Summary: Don't forget, I love, I love, I love you...
Characters/Pairings: Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth Doctors and their various companions, plus River Song
Warnings/Notes: N/A

Reasons for reccing: Before I embark on my Chosen Challenge, I'd like to point the community toward a sweet, possibly bittersweet, Christmas-themed vid set to Vienna Teng's The Atheist Christmas Carol. Purplefringe mixes together clips that shine a light on the depth of care the Doctor feels for the companions whose lives he's touched. The vid emphasizes a gentle, often joyous, and undeniably loving side to the Doctor, while the melody and Teng's voice add a gorgeous touch of melancholy.

Title: What Would You Die For?
Creator: [youtube.com profile] KsuTerni (Thorny Rose)
Rating: N/A
Word Count/Length/Size: 4:59
Creator's Summary: " - Stand with me. It's all I've ever wanted." " - Me too."
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor & Missy, Tenth Doctor, Simm!Master
Warnings/Notes: N/A

Reasons for reccing:
Twelve is and shall always be my Doctor, and I adored Missy from the moment she appeared onscreen. This vid teases out the thread of tragic narrative that grows irresistibly during their seasons together, the slow build of Missy's redemption arc that proves her undoing - betrayed and betraying, left to die alone without the Doctor ever knowing that his friend had been coming back to stand with him, a change of hearts that fulfills the theme "without hope/without witness/without reward." There are glimpses here and there of Missy's sass, but the vid concentrates on the development of her conscience and the haunting connection between her and Twelve in their final hour.
